I love art, and I really want to share with other people my love for art, whether if it's on the internet or the people I actually know in real life. I draw almost anywhere, anytime. Home, class, friend's house... you name it! After three years of serious drawing I finally came to the point where I can clearly see my improvement comparing to the past few years. I also managed to create a unique style which I can call my own.
So, a while ago, I was drawing in class when I notice a classmate of mine has beautiful drawing skills. Her name is Khánh, and her manga style is just amazing. She sat a couple of tables away from me, but I still can reach up to her. I don't usually get along well with the manga/anime style, since I'm more comfortable with the cartoon-ish style more. She showed me a lot of her sketches, and I did the same. She said she really like my style and she thought it's really nice. When I turned to ask her seat-mate, Lan, how she felt about my drawings, she just simply said: "Why do you always draw such big legs? They look weird."
Excuse me?
I have to admit, I always seems to draw people with thicker anatomy comparing to the slim figures the manga style has. I feel like it's better that way. I explained to her that I'm not trying to mimic the manga/anime style like Khánh and I like to draw curvy bodies. Still, Lan said that she really dislike curvy legs and big thighs, so basically, she thought Khánh is better than me because of that.
I know she didn't mean to offend me or butter Khánh up, but I personally felt uncomfortable. Curvy anatomy is my own way of demonstrating the human beauty. I like it that way. I asked Thủy, my best friend and also my tomboyish seat-mate, how she felt towards Lan's opinion, she said: "I don't think so. I like your style better. Curvy limbs makes your female looks stronger. I don't like slim bodies cause it makes even the toughest characters look girlish."
Everybody's got their own opinion towards different art styles. I don't mind taking opinions or critiques, as long as they were putted in the most polite ways possible. But now I think about this, I felt so torn between various opinions. What about you guys, what do you think?
